honoring you...
Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. The remembrance from Neil Cotter is moving and reflects the anguish experienced by so many who lost friends in this war. As long as you are remembered you will remain in our hearts forever….

Ode to a Fallen Friend
A poem I wrote after visiting the wall. I read of Ed's death while I was in Nam in 68. RIP Ed
"His smile is sanctuary,
in our youthful naiveté.
Linger safe forever,
Ed,
here in study hall.
Grope down a sweat-blinding cave
Filled with unfathomable courage
Did fear grip your heart
Like a clenched fist?
The mind painfully formulates
a certain crucible of fears,
napalm and tears.
You know, the place where demons
bestow their unwelcomed web
of seared memory:
I struggle with my friend’s death.
Popularity is fleeting
Lying pale and bleeding
Begging the question in the end: Why?
“Why do young men die in jungles?”
Caressed by undernourished light
I stand moved by this granite’s plight,
Caught somewhere between earth and heaven.
Can certain granite space (section 34E, line 54)
Render a memory trace
Of Private Edward Haddock?"

Thank You
Dear PFC Edward Haddock,
Thank you for your service as a Rifleman. The war was years ago, but we all need to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.
