Remembering An American Hero

Dear LCPL Herve Joseph Guay, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

We were in the same squad.

I remember a tall, long stride taking, always smiling, 200lbs or more Marine from Maine who would do anything for his fellow Marines. I remember the purity of your laugh and the courage in your heart as you served day to day in combat. I knew that all of us could count on you if things got bad and we did when we got into it.

I still have the image of you walking back to the platoon area with old runway decking held over your head and the smile on your face. You used it on the roof of your bunker during the seige at Khe Sanh. You were smiling from ear to ear when you saw the looks on our faces as you returned.

I reconnected with a squad member in 2007 and he told me about you being killed a few months after I was hit and sent home. I felt a profound saddness at this news because you and I had been friend from your first day with the company.

Herv, I will remember your smiling face and mostly our friendship as long as I live and look forward to the time we are back on the line together.
