Our Toby

Thank you for your comments and caring. My oldest brother, Toby, was killed in the mid-air collision of two Cobra attack helicopters returning to Marble Mountain Da Nang for hot reload 18 days from finishing his second tour. He left a wife & new son, both our parents, five brothers, and many, many friends. He loved pretty girls, fast Chevys, Surfing, Skydiving, Flying, being an Officer of Marines and the Corps. I got a break to fly with him out of Quang Tri... And I escorted him home. To us? He's always 25 and smiling.

TOBY GRITZ

YOU WERE SOMETHING SPECIAL. WE ALL HAD A GREAT TIME IN THE VENTURA COLLEGE NEWMAN CLUB 1962-64. YOU COULD TURN ANY DULL MOMENT INTO A LAUGHING EVENT FOR EVERYONE. YOU SERVED WITH GREAT HONOR - THANK YOU. IF I HAD KNOWN THEN, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU, I WOULD HAVE ASKED THE ARMY FOR SPECIAL PERMISSION TO HAVE BEEN YOUR ESCORT OFFICER HOME FROM NAM. WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU AS THAT "FUN TO BE WITH" 19-20 YEAR OLD FRIEND FROM SIMI, CA.

What a fine man.

I remember Toby from High School in Fillmore. The last I remember seeing him was when he came to the house in Bardsdale to have my brother Paul work with him on an Eagle Scout badge. While its been a long time he will always be in my memory and never forgotten. I looked up to him then and still do today.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear 1LT Toby Richard Gritz, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
