Lt. Toby Richard Gritz was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, with Combat Distinguishing Device (V), for his sustained heroism in action.
He served as a Helicopter Pilot and was assigned to HML-367, MAG-16, 1ST MAW, III MAF.

From Quantico to Viet Nam

A great friend who I served with from TBS at MCB Quantico in 1967, Flight School, his wedding in Meridian, MS and our transition to the UH-1E at MCB Camp Pendleton. Toby, Steve Wistrand and I sat together and watched the evening movie, outside the MCAS Marble Mountain Officer's club, the night of 24 March 1970, only hours before the accident.
