Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Airborne rifleman

Sammie Griffin
N.Philip Street, Northern Liberties

Griffin, who enlisted in the Army in September 1964, confided in his last letter home from Vietnam that “I’m trying very hard to stay alive and get back home.” The private first class, a rifleman assigned to Company C of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, died one week before Christmas Day 1965. He was 18 years old. Survivors included his father, two brothers and two sisters.
