I grew up less than 8 miles from Charlie. I still remember as a big boned farm boy with a ready smile. We lost track of each other in 1964. When I came home for my father's funeral in 1967 I ran into a friend at the funeral parlor, he told me he had brough Charlie home. His funeral was the day before my father's. Every time I go back there and visit my father's grave I say hello to Charlie, they rest less than eight feet apart. He was the first, but not the last of my friends I lost in the war.
