Final Mission of COL Asa P. Gray Jr.

COL Asa P. Gray Jr. was the senior American province advisor in Long An Province, RVN, serving with Advisory Team 86, Headquarters, MACV Advisors. On May 13, 1969, when one of the pacified hamlets in his province, Bo Kinh, was threatened by the presence of 200 North Vietnamese soldiers, COL Gray arrived on the scene with another American advisor and about two squads of Popular Forces (PF) soldiers. They walked approximately 100 yards into the hamlet when they were ambushed by the NVA. Gray was shot in the stomach by a sniper. Instead of returning fire, the PF’s fled with the colonel’s interpreter. Gray was moved to a relatively safe area and a medivac was called in. The other American advisor requested air support and marked their position with a smoke grenade. American jets then arrived on the scene and pounded the area, keeping the NVA at bay. Within an hour, some tanks and APC’s from the Third Brigade arrived and the colonel’s medivac was able to safely land and recover Gray. He was taken to a military hospital where he expired the following day.
