beetle was walking point on mutters ridge when hewas shot by a single round at almost point blank range.his squad leader cpl.boyer went to his aid and was shot and killed also.this was my first patrol in country. i will always remmember them.

Remembering Byrle
Although I did not know him well, I did get one "special" opportunity to sit next to him and chat with him. This took place on the evening of June 3, 1968 at our graduation ceremony from Westside High School in Omaha NE. Byrle, as a member of ROTC, was in full uniform...
Despite the fact that, by that time, it was obvious that there was substantial danger involved with going to Vietnam, Byrle indicated absolutely NO FEAR. Rather, he expressed great pride in his intentions to immediately head off for basic training-- with expectations of going to Vietnam after completion, if necessary...
For the next year, every time that I heard or read something about Vietnam, I thought about Byrle and prayed for his safety. But unfortunately, it was "not to be." However, his sacrifice for his country was definitely not in vain. He left a lasting memory of his courage with me and, I'm sure, many others-- and he will not be forgotten...
