Oscar my friend my brother we humped the mountains the jungles with the heat, monsoon rains under full ruck and you with the m-60. it has taken a lot of years for me to get to this. i remember the day on hill 474 when the captain came to our squad wanting you with the m-60 to come up front. it was the last time i saw you. when i think back i always remember just the two of us in our hole one night shareing a can of rice pudding and talking about our homes back in the real world.
until i can shake your hand.

To My Dearest Older Brother, Oscar
There will never be enough words that can be said for the ultimate price you paid and gave, your life. You are missed and loved. Before mom passed on from this life to a better place, she shared with me that you had chosen my name to be Elizabeth and that you had taken my name from the bible. What a blessing to know that you had a part in choosing my name. I was only 3 yrs old when you died but I do have one small memory of you and that is when you use to lift me up and throw me in the air to make me laugh. Several years back I had the pleasure of walking and receiving your HS diploma as you and several others were honored at an E-E High School graduation. You left your mark here on earth and you will never be forgotten.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear CPL Oscar Cruz Gonzales, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter
