Thank you for what you did for our country.

As an American, I would like to thank you for serving our country in war. You were in the army and were lost in combat. You are dead now, but you did have some courage to go out there and fight. Thank you. Without people like you, America wouldn't be what it is today. Once again, thank you.

CAPTAIN GATES
WAS THE PILOT

AND

CAPTAIN LAFAYETTE
WAS THE OBSERVOR

ON A FLIGHT THAT DEPARTED
HUE / PHU BAI AIRFIELD
AT 1540 HRS IN AN
OV1A MOHAWK
AS THE NUMBER TWO AIRCRAFT
ON A VISUAL RECONAISSANCE
MISSION OVER LAOS.

THE NUMBER ONE AIRCRAFT WAS AN
OV1A MOHAWK FLOWN BY
CAPTAIN HARRY DUENSING
WHO'S OBSERVOR WAS
SP 5 LARRY JOHNSON.

AT APPROXIMATELY 1648 HRS THE USAF
AIRBORNE COMMAND POST HILLSBOROUGH
RECEIVED A MAY-DAY FROM THE TWO
AIRCRAFT AND DISPATCHED TWO FAC
AIRCRAFT IN THE AREA FOR AN
IMMEDIATE SEARCH FOR THE DOWNED
AIRCRAFT AND CREWS.

AT 1730 HRS THE AIR CREWS WERE ON
THE GROUND ABOUT 1 KILOMETRE APART.
ONE OF THE FAC AIRCRAFT ESTABLISHED
RADIO CONTACT WITH BOTH CREWS WHO
REPORTED THAT THEY WERE OK.

DUENSING'S AIRCRAFT HAD BEEN HIT BY
ENEMY GROUNDFIRE AND THE NUMBER TWO
AIRCRAFT BEGAN FLYING COVER FOR
THE OTHER CREW BUT WERE IMMEDIATELY HIT.

ALL FOUR FLYERS SAFELY EJECTED AND
WERE IN RADIO CONTACT WITH AIR COVER.

DUENSING AND JOHNSON WERE EVACUATED
SAFELY AND RADIO CONTACT CONTINUED
FOR ONE AND A HALF HOURS BEFORE CONTACT
WAS LOST WITH GATES AND LAFAYETTE.

THEIR LAST TRANSMISSION REPORTED THAT
THEY WERE BEING SURROUNDED BY VIETCONG
AND IT IS BELIEVED THEY WERE CAPTURED
BUT NEITHER MAN WAS EVER SEEN ALIVE
AGAIN.


BOTH

ARE STILL CONSIDERED TO BE

MISSING IN ACTION
