THE WALL OF FACES

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. Having read the remembrances of you referenced in the book Last Man Out has inspired me to read the book. May you rest in eternal peace.

I served in the U.S. Army in the same time frame as PFC Ayers. Not long before he died in Vietnam, I was assigned to Ft. McPherson, Georgia. I was asked to serve as a pallbearer on the military funeral detail for PFC Ayers, and was honored to do so. His funeral was only the second of my then-young life, the first having been my father’s. I went on to serve on numerous military funeral details for young soldiers who died in Vietnam, but the day we laid PFC Ayers to rest remains vivid in my mind to this day.

On the remembrance of your 73rd birthday, your sacrifice is not forgotten.
