Ground Casualty

PFC Robert I. Gracia was a military policeman (MP) serving with the 218th MP Company, 97th MP Battalion, 16th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. On October 2, 1970, Gracia was in a jeep at My Hoan, four kilometers northwest of Ninh Hoa city in Khanh Hoa Province, RVN. At 5:00 PM, another individual exiting the jeep caught his M16 rifle on the door causing the weapon to discharge. The errant round struck Gracia in the left flank inflicting massive vascular and internal organ injuries. He was admitted to the 483rd U.S. Air Force Hospital at Cam Ranh Bay where, despite intense efforts to save his life, he expired 2-1/2 hours after being wounded. Gracia was 20 years old. His remains were released to Graves Registration personnel for processing, then forwarded to the U.S. Army Mortuary at Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon where transportation was organized for their return to Gracia’s family in New York state.
