KIA Day

I was wounded and lay beside Garcia as he died. this was on 05-03-1969 around 8:30 AM on a Saturday morning. We were ambushed while patrolling the road between Saigon and Ann Loc. A RPG went off and we jumped off the tank we were riding on. The Viet Cong laid a long volley of rifle fire that was just about an inch above our heads. Garcia had caught some shrapnel from the first RPG and while laying on the ground our tank backed over us. I was ran over across my thighs. Garcia was ran over across his hips. While laying there Garcia turn over on his side to try to get relief from the pain and caught a bullet in his back. That was when he quit saying anything and I knew he was dead. Garcia was a brave and courage's leader. I respected him as much as anyone could. I pray I will see him again in heaven.

To my friend and a true american hero

To my friend from high school and college, you are always remembered especially on Memorial Day. I remember the last time we were together,it was at the Oakland Induction Center. You were going into the Army and me into the Air Force. Those were happier days.

Rest well my friend and one day we will meet again.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SSGT Richard Calude Garcia, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter
