Ground Casualty

SP5 James P. Galvin served with Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment, 1st Transportation Battalion, 34th General Support Group, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. Galvin arrived in Vietnam in May 1966 and was stationed aboard the USNS Corpus Christi Bay (T-ARVH-1), a floating maintenance facility for helicopters operating out of Cam Ranh Bay. The ship was run by civilians under the Military Sea Transport Service but the aircraft maintenance facilities aboard the ship were manned by Army Material Command's 1st Transportation Battalion. Galvin served as a company clerk and was a member of a team of four Army divers who routinely inspected the Corpus Christi Bay’s hull to safeguard it against magnetic mines placed by enemy frogmen. His dive team also conducted rescue or salvage operations when helicopters went down in the water. About six months into his service, Galvin went on sick call after he developed a brain tumor. He was treated at several U.S. medical facilities in Vietnam before being flown to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines where he was operated on in their neurosurgical unit. Despite the best efforts to save his life, Galvin expired December 1, 1966, in the Philippines. His father flew from California, arriving ten hours before his death. His mother and brother arrived shortly after. Galvin was 23 years old. A memorial service was held near Galvin’s hometown in California at Travis Air Force Base.
