honoring you...

Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. While all deaths in Vietnam are tragic that you died just six days before your 21st birthday is especially so. May you rest in eternal peace.

Your Neighbor

We were your neighbors across the street from your house on Alan Drive in Ansonia, CT. I was standing with my father on the front lawn of our ranch house and you came over to say goodbye to my father, just before leaving for Vietnam. My memory is that my father was putting up an American flag on a flagpole when you walked over. It was a sunny day. You had a uniform on and you were smiling and chatting with my father. He shook your hand and wished you luck. I don’t remember the year, but I remember you very well. My father was very sad to hear the news that you were gone. I remember your mother too, afterwards. A portrait of you in your uniform on the wall, a large mural of you in a room. I could tell that you would always be missed and loved. I’ve thought about you throughout the years, and that snapshot of that last day in the 1960s, still frozen in my mind. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice.
