5/29/2021. John "Bubba" was my cousin. I still live in our hometown of Palatka Florida where he lies in eternal rest. I visit his grave often and miss him every day.

Warrant Officer John Lynwood Fortner, Served with Company C, 228th Assault Support Helicopter Battalion, 11th Aviation Group, 1st Cavalry Division, United States Army Vietnam.

I was at Quan Loi that day, near the east end of the airstrip. I watched the whole thing. He lost partial control and droopped his load of wire yards from where I stood. The managed to get it out over the berm, sparing any ground casualties while he fought for control. During this very long minute he
went inverted twice. Recovering from the second was too much for the airframe—it broke in half. I will never forget.

Dear WO John Fortner,
Thank you for your service as an Utility/Observation Helicopter Pilot with the 1st Cavalry. It is now fall, and as the seasons pass, it is important to remember you all. It has been too long, and it's about time for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.
