Never forget

When I was a sophomore in high school I read John Dramesi’s book and since then every May 18th I attend Mass, Adoration or just go to church in memory of Col Atterbury. As a sophomore in college I was visiting my family at Bergstrom AFB and my dad took me to the Edwin Atterbury theater on base. I didn’t know you personally but I will always call May 18th “Ed Atterbury Day” - 25 years ago today my husband proposed to me on this day! We all knew it was Ed Atterbury Day so it was unexpected. In the meantime I will continue to pray for you and your family! I hope you’ve met my dad by now - he went to Heaven March 28, 2017 - Col Dave Reiner.
I hope to meet you in Heaven Col Atterbury!

Final Mission of CAPT Edwin L. Atterberry

On August 12, 1967, pilot CAPT Edwin L. Atterberry and navigator CAPT Thomas V. Parrott comprised the crew of a U.S. Air Force McDonnell Douglas RF-4C Phantom II aircraft (#65-0882) from the 11th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing based at Udorn Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand on a photographic reconnaissance mission over Hanoi, North Vietnam. During the operation, their Phantom was hit by fragments from a North Vietnamese S-75 Dvina (SA-2 Guideline) surface-to-air missile. Both crewmen were captured after ejecting. On May 11, 1969, Atterberry was able to escape captivity from a North Vietnamese prison camp known as “The Zoo.” He was recaptured twelve hours later and reportedly was subjected to brutal torture by his captors. He was last seen by other prisoners on May 14, 1969, and it was later announced that Atterberry had died. A death certificate issued by the North Vietnamese stated that that Atterberry died of cerebral meningitis from a Japanese B-type virus with the complication of bronchial pneumonia. Parrott remained in captivity and was released at the end of the war. Atterberry was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel during the time he was missing.
