Thank You For Your Service

Lt. Fitzgerald,

Thank you for your service and supreme sacrifice. My dad was Lt (JG) Anthony Williams. He served with you an advisor in the 16th RVN costal advisory group. Because of your heroic actions on 7 August 1967, my dad was able to retreat to the river. While running to the river he took shrapnel to the face and chest blinding him. He was still able to swim out into the river where he was picked up by a fisherman. He went on to have a successful career, married Sheila O’Neill and raised 4 children and had 10 grandchildren. Thank you for your heroism.

LIEUTENANT

WILLIAM CHARLES FITZGERALD

At about 0300 on 7 August 1967, the Coastal Defense Group Sixteen compound came under a vicious attack by two Viet Cong battalions.

The assault began with an intensive mortar barrage followed immediately by the advance of enemy troops.

Lieutenant Fitzgerald, the senior American commander, immediately ordered a retreat of the civilians within the compound.

Because of the compound's location adjacent to a river and the position of the aggressors, the only escape route was via water in small boats.

Lieutenant Fitzgerald and three others delayed their retreat as long as possible in order to provide covering fire and to direct fire from surrounding friendly forces.

Many calls were made to orbiting gunship aircraft, artillery units, and Fast Patrol Craft to provide defensive fire.

The Viet Cong attack, however, was swift and well coordinated.

It soon became apparent the South Vietnamese forces were decimated and the American bunker was the sole remaining source of resistance.

As the situation became dire then deteriorated, Fitzgerald ordered his last three remaining defenders to retreat while he used small arms fire to cover their escape.

Lieutenant Fitzgerald was mortally wounded in this action.
