Ground Casualty
PFC Randy L. Fisher was a rifleman serving with M Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Forces. In the fall of 1970, M Company, 3/1 was assigned to the Combined Unit Pacification Program (CUPP). As a CUPP company, it was broken down into squads, each of which was paired with a local Vietnamese militia to protect a particular village. Their combined actions centered around territorial security, training the militia, and the merging of Marine firepower and military skill with the militia's intimate knowledge of the local people and terrain. At 9:50 AM on October 1st, Fisher was fatally injured in an accidental discharge incident in his living quarters in Quang Nam Province, RVN, when another Marine’s M16 rifle was inadvertently fired. Two rounds struck Fisher in the chest and abdomen. His body was taken to a medical dispensary where, per protocol, Fisher’s remains were positively identified by two fellow Marines. A U.S. naval chaplain present offered prayers. The remains were transported to the U.S. Army Mortuary at Da Nang and released to Graves Registration personnel. Following processing, they were transferred to Tan Son Nhut Air Base near Saigon and flown to Travis Air Force Base in California before being returned to Fisher’s family in Iowa. Reportedly, the Marine who fired the negligent round received a punishment of six months at hard labor, a $600 fine, and a dishonorable discharge.
