GERALD LEE FELTNER Summer of 1965

My younger sister and I met Jerry in the summer of 1965 while he was stationed at NAS Memphis. He was working at the military hospital where my older sister had taken her young son for an eye infection. He was cute and sweet and took time the time to talk to us. We only knew each other for a few months, but he became friends with me and my family. He was a welcomed visitor in my parents home for Sunday dinners and just hanging out. He was only 20 when we met and he, my little sister and I had so much fun that summer. He was like a big brother to us. Late in the summer of 65' Jerry met someone very special and we didn't see him as often any more. He was shipped out in October 1965 and was killed after being in Vietnam only a few weeks. I read his obituary in the newspaper - he left a young widow and a baby on the way. He never got to see his child and the young bride never saw her husband again. I think of Jerry often and wonder what became of his wife and child. This was the first time in my young 18 years that I saw death so close and personal. I will never forget the Summer of 65' and the impact his short life and untimely death had on my life. Thank you Jerry for being my friend.
