Distinguished Flying Cross Citation

Thomas J. Evans

Distinguished Flying Cross
AWARDED FOR ACTIONS
DURING Vietnam War
Service: Army
Rank: Warrant Officer
GENERAL ORDERS:
Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 381 (March 15, 1967)
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Warrant Officer (WO-1) Thomas J. Evans, Jr. (ASN: W-3152834), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 28 February 1967 while serving as a pilot assigned to the Air Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Warrant Officer Evans was pilot of an armed helicopter engaged in action against the Viet Cong north of the village of Tay Ninh. Returning from a mission, his aircraft began receiving heavy ground fire from enemy automatic weapons. Despite the immense danger involved, Warrant Officer Evans piloted his helicopter at an extremely low level in order to mark the enemy's position with smoke bombs. During the second low level pass, Warrant Officer Evans, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, fearlessly maneuvered his aircraft in such a manner as to enable the door gunners to bring deadly fire on the insurgent force. It was at this time, when he was completely exposed to the enemy fire, that Warrant Officer Evans was mortally wounded. His rare courage, superior piloting and perseverance throughout this encounter were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
