Ground Casualty
SP4 Herman Evans was a Special Purpose Materiel Supply Specialist serving with C Company, Troop Command, Army Depot Qui Nhon, Army Support Command Qui Nhon, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. Evans’ responsibilities included the storage and distribution of repair parts for special purpose equipment used by U.S. troops in Vietnam. On September 8, 1970, nearly seven months to the day he began his tour, Evans was involved in a dispute with another individual at his base’s Post Exchange (PX). Evans reportedly left the PX and retrieved an M16 rifle which he used to shoot the other man. While attempting to flee the scene, a security guard opened fire, wounding Evans several times. He was admitted to the 67th Evacuation Hospital at Qui Nhon in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the liver, right kidney, right lung, spinal cord, and all extremities except the left leg. He lived two days before expiring September 10th. Evans was 22 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
