My best friend

Jerry (Gerald) and I were working at a little grocery store in our home town of Eureka Springs Arkansas after we got out of high school in 1969. Jerry came to work one day and said Robert, I talked to a recruiter and he is coming to talk to us. Well to make a long story short, he came and we joined on the buddy system and went in on the 120 day delayed program. That put 2 green people in Ft. Polk, LA in Sep. 1969. We went through basic training. He was an engineer and went to Ft. Eustis VA. I was in the signal corp and went to Ft. Gordon GA. After AIT I was sent to Vietnam, Jerry was sent to Germany. Well he didn`t like it there and volunteered to go to Vietnam. You can imagine the shock when I received a letter from my Mother telling me about Jerry`s death on 2-28-71. I will never forget him as long as I live and will post his picture every year on Veterans day. I hope to see my friend again someday.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Gerald Lee Evans, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Mary Frye – 1932
