Ground Casualty

CWO Robert J. Elliott was a U.S. Army AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter pilot serving with F Troop, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. Elliott’s unit operated “Pink Teams,” hunter-killer missions where two AH-1G’s fly high and a single OH-6A observation helicopter flies low to draw fire, setting up the Cobras to take out the hostiles. The unit also flew UH-1 transport aircraft carrying Blues Teams, a designated ready-reaction force to assist downed air crews, “LRRP’s” (Long Range Reconnaissance Teams), or Ranger teams needing insertion or extraction. On September 8, 1971, Elliott was flying close air support for an Australian ground unit in contact in Long Khanh Province, RVN. After expending his Cobra’s ordinance, he flew to Gia Ray Heliport to quickly rearm and return to action. Elliott exited the aircraft to assist with the reloading of the Mk 40 rockets. Unbeknownst to him, one of the launcher tubes was “hot,” meaning it was stuck in a fire status. When the rocket was inserted, it immediately fired. Elliot was in front of the rocket pod when the 2.75” projectile discharged. He was mortally injured after it passed through him. A Blues Team on lunch break nearby came over to assist. They thought they detected a heartbeat in Elliott and quickly flew him to an evacuation hospital at Long Binh Post. Medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.
