I sat next to Larry on the plane going to Vietnam

I remember sitting next to Larry on the plane to Vietnam. We were seated alphabetically on the plane. His last name being Arnold and mine Appel we sat next to each other. When we arrived we arrived in Nam, we both went to An Hoa
Larry went with 2nd Bn 5th Marines, I went to Echo Battery 2nd Bn 11th Marines. I remember how shocked I was when I heard he was KIA from a friend that was in his company. RIP Brother! Semper Fi.

AMBUSHED THE NIGHT BEFORE ON THE WAY TO FORM A BLOCKING FORCE FOR A MARINE COL.WHO WAS WITH A ARVN FORCE PUSHING THE ENEMY INTO OUR AMBUSH. WAITING ALL NIGHT AND THE MORNING IN THE POURING RAIN THE COL CALLED OFF THE OPERATION. WE WERE TOGETHER ALL NIGHT, YOU WERE IN CHARGE OF WEAPONS PLT, I WAS IN 1ST PLT 1ST SQ GOLF CO 2/5.WE WERE TOLD TO MOVE OUT AFTER SPENDING THE NIGHT TOGETHER TALKING AND BECOMING GOOD FRIENDS.LARRY LOOKED AT ME AND SAID NOW WATCH AFTER ALL THE BS TO GET HERE SOMEBODY IS GOING TO GET MESSED UP! YOU WERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME WHEN I LOOKED BEHIND ME TO ANSWER MY SQ LDR, I STARTED TO TURN AROUND WHEN THE BIGGEST EXPLOSION I EVER FELT BLEW US UP.I LANDED OVER 30 FT FROM WHERE I WAS. I WAS UNCONSCIENCIOUS & WHEN I WOKE UP WAS PARALIZED.I LAID THERE AND MY HEAD WAS TURNED TO THE LEFT AND THE CORPSMAN CAME INTO MY FIELD OF VISION, I COULD NOT MOVE AND MY SQ THOUGHT I WAS DEAD.CORPSMAN MOORE WHILE LOOKING AT ME HEARD LARRY CRAWLING OUT OF A RICEPADDY.MOORE WENT TO LARRYS AID, LARRY LOOKED AT ME AND SAID I TOLD YOU SOMEONE WAS GOING TO GET MESSED UP.CORPSMAN MOORE COVERED LARRY WITH A PONCHO AND DID EVERTHING POSSIBLE FOR LARRY, ALL OUR CORPSMAN WERE ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY. I WISH I HAD A DOLLAR FOR EVERY TIME I THOUGHT ABOUT 8/26/67 & LARRY I`D BE A RICH MARINE. SEMPER FI LARRY,SGT JESSE LYON
