Chip

We were only penpals, but I thought he was so special. He told me how much he loved his daughter. He wrote such vivid letters about the war and I kept them for a long, long time until they were destroyed in a fire. I stopped hearing from him when I went to college. Found out later he tried to visit me at home, but my parents never told me. Wish I could have met him in person.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SSGT George Elwood Eaton, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Chip

I served with Chip in Alaska, Hawaii, VN . At Fort Rich he would wake me in the middle of the night after being downtown and consuming a few Black Russians, and insist that I drink a beer with him. I remember him showing me a picture of his daughter once. He gave me two glass floats that he had picked up along the coast of the Alaska Peninsula when on a long range patrol that I missed going on. I still have those floats and they always remind me of Chip. He had a shoulder that was easily dislocated and the last time I saw him in VN 1967 shortly before I left, he was in a sling. I found his name on the traveling wall years ago but was unsure if it was Chip or another Eaton. The photo here confirms that it is my long ago friend that only had a couple years to live the last time I saw him. I hope he is at peace now and among friends.

Always in my heart

I'm so proud of you and the sacrifices you made for our country and of those you served with. Thank you.

I will always remember the last time I saw you. I miss you still and am saddened that I didn't get to know you as a daughter should.

Love always.
