Ground Casualty
PVT Allen J. Du Roy was an infantryman serving with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. Following Operation Lam Son 719 (February 8 – March 25, 1971), U.S. ground forces concentrated on defending critical bases while the South Vietnamese assumed primary responsibility for the ground war. The 101st Airborne Division gradually disengaged from direct contact with North Vietnamese Army units in the jungled western regions in I Corps and concentrated on patrolling and sweeping the rocket belts in its assigned coastal region. On the early morning of April 18, 1971, Du Roy was with his unit at an abandoned fire support base 16 kilometers (9.6 miles) northeast of Luoi village in Thua Thien Province, RVN. After passing the night at the deactivated fire position, Du Roy reportedly exited the perimeter to relieve himself when he detonated a friendly mechanical ambush device. He died after sustaining traumatic wounds and bleeding to his lower extremities. Du Roy, 22, was posthumously promoted to Private First Class. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
