Peder, My name is Steve Durbin, I was your squad leader when the mortar round claimed your life at Cam Lo Headquarters, Vietnam. I was pulled out of the field to rotate back to the states that fateful day. I,ve always felt guilt about it...somehow I felt that if I hadn’t Been relieved of duty just an hour before thatmortar round got you, I could have prevented your death.

I visit your grave a lot. I bring flowers and just talk to you. I call our Corpsman Doc Nunn while there and we just talk about that day. I am the artist for the Fallen Hero Portrait Project (www.fallenheroesproject.org) and if I could find a good photo of you I would do that portrait for free for your family. I was also the Marine that took care of you that day until you could be removed from the field I will never forget. I collected your dog tags. I will NEVER FORGET!
