THE WALL OF FACES

Sonny and I were Marines together in 3rd Recon in Quang Tri in 1968. We did every patrol together, if one of us went, so did the other. The only reason I wasn’t with him that day is because our CO made me take R&R as I had been in country 10 months and was supposed to take it at 6 or 7 months. He was so enthusiastic and likable . I was crushed when I returned and found out he had been killed on a body retrieval patrol. I think about him every day and have for 54 years.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
