Someone special

I’m 70 now and we were friends when we were just kids! Next door neighbors, your parents were my godparents. I’m not going to talk about your service all though I thank you for that. I want to say how it hurt to lose you and how I missed you after you were gone. You were someone special and didn’t deserve to leave us so soon!

Ground Casualty

PFC Donald G. Dingeldein was a machine gunner serving with C Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On September 14, 1966, PFC Dingeldein was at the Battery K, 4th Battalion, 12th Marines artillery firing position, two miles south of the Nam-O Bridge in Quang Nam Province, RVN, when he was fatally wounded in an accidental discharge incident. Reportedly, a .30 caliber carbine rifle belonging to an Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) Regional Forces soldier attached to C Company was inadvertently fired. The errant round hit Dingeldein in the right jaw, exiting the back of his head and killing him instantly. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and ttu.edu]
