Ground Casualty
CN Ralph A. Didamo Jr. was a Constructionman serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion-5 (NMCB-5), 3rd Naval Construction Brigade, Military Assist Command, Vietnam (MACV). On January 2, 1966, Didamo was with about a dozen Seabees on the east side of the Son Han (Han River) at Da Nang, RVN, offloading wood and other materials for a cantonment project. The material was slated for the construction of temporary housing for Marines and Seabees in Northern I Corps. While performing the work, he suffered massive crush injuries after a pile of heavy lumber fell on him. Didamo was medically evacuated to the U.S. Air Force Hospital at Clark Air Base in the Philippines where he died the following day from acute renal failure.
