Final Mission of SP5 Terry W. Dickerhoff

On April 1, 1969, a U.S. Army helicopter UH-1H (tail number 66-17042) from the120th Command Aviation Company, "The Underdogs,". crashed shortly after takeoff from Tan Son Nhut Air Base Complex in Gia Dinh Province, RVN. Six U.S. personnel perished in the crash, including the entire crew of the aircraft plus two passengers aboard. There were three survivors. The lost crewmen included aircraft commander CW2 Michael G. Taylor, pilot WO1 Dale A. Yateman, crew chief SP4 Philip C. Stafford, and gunner SP4 Barry L. Golden. The lost passengers were SP5 Terry W. Dickerhoff and SP5 Rex E. Rader. The flight had just departed from Hotel 3 Heliport at Tan Son Nhut and climbed to approximately 500 feet of altitude when it suffered an engine failure. The pilots attempted autorotation, however, the autorotation was unsuccessful, ending in a crash and fire. The main rotor blade of the helicopter struck a telephone pole before the aircraft made ground contact, with the tail striking first, severing the tail boom. The fuselage section continued forward, coming to rest on its right side and completely engulfed in flames. Two bodies were discovered outside the wreckage along the path of the aircraft. To my favorite Cousin

Terry, you were about 9 years older , taller and always new so much more than I but I always loved and respected you! At Christmas time you were fun to watch and I always caught the olders going outside for a smoke in Plymouth or Kokomo! HA! HA! I know that Aunt Betty and Grandma Minor loved you like crazy but I only wanted to be old enough to do the things that you did and be as tall as you. Thank you for teaching me how to play ping-pong and pool and that family was always very important. You were my hero and I joined the military in your honor in 1975. I will never forget our last visit with you just before we lost you in Vietnam. Your service and selfless duty set the example for me to serve until my retirement in 2012. I pray that Beth and Amy will one day see their brother again and I may lay eyes on my hero cousin as well.

You cousin, Scotty

My BEST friend

Terry and I both extended our tour of duty so we could get an "early out" a discharge 6 months early and credit for 3 years served.
We were both going to go to Cam Ranh Bay after we went on R&R. Terry really wanted to go to Australia and I wanted to go to Bangkok as I had friends from Basic Training stationed there. Terry had to get a Passport to go to Australia while I did not need one for Bangkok otherwise I would have been on the chopper with him.
I have thought about Terry so many, many times. I always thought I would meet his parents so I could tell them what a wonderful man Terry was and that he was also my best friend.
I started thinking of him again yesterday and my wife brought down a photo album which has a picture of Terry sitting on a sandbagged bunker putting on suntan lotion...his favorite Coppertone. He always told me that the company should make a men's cologne with the Coppertone fragrance.
So I spent yesterday afternoon drinking far to much and making my mind up that I would FINALLY go to the Viet Nam Memorial and find his name. My wife, Carol, and soon to be 19 daughter Mary Margaret are going with me in August.
He always wanted me to meet his sister and showed me her photo all the time. He thought we would hit it off and I thought you were absolutely beautiful. Maybe we will finally meet. I hope you see this but am taking no chances and will start looking for your phone number. Info: H-925-685-5749, W-925-313-7548. I live in Concord, CA. I am at the office by 6:30 PST and I would love to hear from you.
