Escort Duty

I had the honor of escorting this hero from Dover AFB in Delaware to his home in Long Island. He was almost exactly my age, just six days younger. I have not had a more emotional experience in the nearly fifty years after. I cherish the memory with tears.

Happy Birthday, Joe

Hi Joe, it was a long time back we spent time together but it feels like only yesterday. I learned a very valuable lesson from you and never got to say "Thanks"!

I often wonder about the rest of your family and the many true friends you had, I hope they are all well?

Will never forget the "King Kullen" days!

Miss you and you are always in my prayers,

Gary (Sharkey)

Remembering An American Hero

Dear SGT Joseph John Di Landro, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
