Final Mission of SFC Curtis C. Dees
SFC Curtis C. Dees was an Indirect Fire Infantryman serving with E Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division. On May 5, 1969, SFC Dees was part of a security element leading a convoy on Route 6A near FSB Pershing, four miles north of Trang Bang in Hua Nghia Province, RVN. They were operating on intelligence that the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) planned to ambush the convoy. The convoy’s lead jeep with Dees in it had just passed Check Point Foxtrot when the enemy attacked. Dees was killed in the exchange of fire. Artillery, helicopter gunships, and air strikes were placed on the enemy positions and sixteen NVA were killed. The following day, a 2/12 Patrol Base Dees (aka “Hard Spot Dees”) was established south of FSB Pershing (May 6, 1969, closed October 1969), named to honor Dees.
