Remembering An American Hero

Dear SP5 Jose Manuel Dela Torre, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Jose (Joe) Manuel De La Torre, you will not be forgotten

Jose (Joe) Manuel De La Torre was a high school classmate of mine. We lost Joe on 18 June 1969 in Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. Joe was a
UH-1 helicopter Crew Chief assigned to the 282ND ASSAULT HELICOPTER Company (Blackcats), 212TH Aviation Battalion, 1ST Aviation Brigade. Joe was within just a few days of completing his third combat tour in-country and he was killed on what would have been his last mission before returning home.
Joe was a crew member on one of six 282ND “Blackcat” UHN-1 helicopters that were engaged in a troop lift west of Quang Ngaill. The lead aircraft, in which Joe was flying as crew chief /gunner in the lead aircraft when it came under intense fire from enemy ground positions. His aircraft rolled inverted and exploded on short final to the landing zone (LZ). This resulted in the loss of all four men on-board Joe’s helicopter. All five of the other aircraft in the lift were hit numerous times, with several other aviators receiving minor wounds

NATIVE AMERICAN PRAYER

It is said a man hasn't died as long as he is remembered. This prayer is a way for families, friends and fellow veterans to remember our fallen brothers and sisters. Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die
