To the Father I Never Got to Know

The Wall That Heals, came to our home town this month. I was so grateful to see it here, because I have yet to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC.

When I walked into the stadium to see The Wall That Heals for the first time I was humbled. Seeing all the names inscribed on each panel makes you realize how much was lost. As I walked along the wall searching for your panel I couldn’t help but say to every panel I passed, “Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice.”

At your panel I looked for your name (Panel W20 Line 83). When I found your name, I dropped to my knees, placed my hand on your name and cried. Seeing your name amongst all the others hit me. So many lost their lives. So many families lost their loved ones.

I knew in that moment “The Wall That Heals” had to come. I needed this moment. I needed to see this. I needed healing.

I am so honored to be your daughter. You are my hero. I will honor and remember your sacrifice always and carry you in my heart forever.

Your loving daughter,
Gayleen
