A memory then, now and future.
2nd LT John Dawson's family member (sister I think) had approached me while I was serving on recruiting duty in Adrian, Michigan during the early 2000's. She brought John's medal and insignia box that contains his insignia's, medals and other uniform accessories. She handed the box to me and asked if I would take care of it, and I said of course I will. Fast forward 20+ years, my son will commission as a Marine 2nd LT this year after graduation at UVA and he will be the holder of John's effects. He will wear John's collar emblems for his commissioning ceremony.

I was there
I was Lt Dawson’s radio operator on our forward observer team. There were 13 KIA that day including him and 31 WIA including me. One of the many nameless firefights Marines in Vietnam engaged in, for a single company, Bravo 1st Bn 4th Marines it was a heavy toll. On this Memorial Day, I remember him and the others who died that day. Edward Burke, Cpl, USMC (Ret)
