REMEMBRANCES

LEFT FOR GLENN EUGENE ANKRUM
POSTED ON 3.24.2004

If I should die...remembrances for CDR. Glenn Eugene ANKRUM, USN...who died so we may remain free!!!

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again to life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.

Thank you Commander

Although we never met personally, I want to thank you Glenn Eugene Ankrum, for your courageous and valiant service, many years of faithfully contributing, and most holy sacrifice, given to this great country of ours!

Your Spirit is alive--and strong, therefore, you shall never be forgotten, nor has your death been in vain!

Again, thank you Commander Ankrum, for a job well done!

FAIR WINDS, FOLLOWING SEAS, AND ETERNAL PEACE MY FRIEND

same place, same date

i didn't know anyone in nam. i am all of 25 years old. but i wanted to write and say: you might have known my uncle as you shared his date and place of death. robert joe williamson was killed the same day at the same place and it has been 34 years. to your family, i feel for you, i have seen what my father has gone through and so many others in this nation. we lost so many. i am thinking of you (the family) just a few days after the anniversary of your loved ones death. God Bless you all!

teacher and friend

As a young sailor aboard the USS PC 1172, Mr. Ankrum took me under his wing. The self confidence he helped me gain and the nautical skills such as navigation learned from him have served me well all my life.He was the most respected of officers by all the crew, a very dear friend from those years and I think of him so very often as that officer and gentleman in the best traditions of the naval service that he was. Farewell my friend, fair winds and following seas. R. G, Floyd Lt.Cdr. USNR

Our unsung Hero

I never met Glenn personally. He was only known to me through my Dad, Raymond Howard, Gunner's Mate 3rd Class who served during the Korean War. When Glenn was a young junior officer he met and became best friends with a junior enlisted man, my dad. I don't know a lot of details, but they had an apartment together (before, during, or after the following incident). Dad was out of the Navy and Glenn came in from sea and dad was living on the streets in the Bowery of New York. Somehow Glenn found out dad's whereabouts and took leave and set off to New York to find him. Thank God, he did find him and pulled him from the gutter and helped him back on his feet. A man who gives of his time and money in such a way says much about a man's character and the type of person he was. I'm sure he was a hero to some, but he was definitely a hero to me and my dad, thanks Glenn.
