Rest in Peace and Thank You, Larry, for your sacrifice.

I felt compelled to thank Larry, in post mortem. I was viewing Gun Trucks of Vietnam today and the story, video and tribute to Larry stirred my conscience.
I also traveled An Khe Pass. My tour in Vietnam was 1969-70. The pass was indeed treacherous and dangerous.
Larry sacrificed himself that day in '71 for the love of his comrades. RIP, Larry.

An American Hero

Was watching a documentary about Vietnam Gun Trucks and the 459th Trans....this was where I learned about the actions taken on that day and of the people your actions saved! Here it is almost 48 years since that fateful day and you came into my life....After looking at your photos that smile of yours is what stands out....Rest well warrior you will be forever remembered.

Final Mission of SP4 Larry G. Dahl

SP4 Larry G. Dahl was a heavy vehicle driver assigned to the 359th Transportation Company. On February 23, 1971, SP4 Dahl distinguished himself was serving as a machine gunner on a gun truck near An Khe, Binh Dinh Province. The gun truck “Brutus” in which SP4 Dahl was riding was sent with two other gun trucks to assist in the defense of a convoy that had been ambushed by an enemy force. The gun trucks entered the battle zone and engaged the attacking enemy troops with a heavy volume of machine gun fire, causing a large number of casualties. After a brief period of intense fighting, the attack subsided. As the gun trucks were preparing to return to their normal escort duties, an enemy hand grenade was thrown into the truck in which SP4 Dahl was riding. Instantly realizing the great danger, SP4 Dahl called a warning to his companions and threw himself directly onto the grenade. Through his complete disregard for his safety, SP4 Dahl saved the lives of the other members of the truck crew while sacrificing his own. As a result of SP4 Dahl's conspicuous gallantry and extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor [Taken from SP4 Dahl’s Congressional Medal of Honor citation]

Lost but never forgotten

Larry, I never got to meet you and it kills me inside. I was born 2 years and 4 months after your gallant deed. Our family has always displayed a level of devotion and selflessness that touches everyone around us. I sing your praises every year but can never sate the pain that is having never gotten to know you. Know that you are loved regardless and I'm looking forward to seeing you upon my own passing. I just hope you'll be ready for the most afterlife fun ever cause according to your bother, Arthur Eugene Dahl, that we were one and the same. With love and hopes of reunitement, Kelly Dahl.
