honoring you...

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.

Ground Casualty

PFC Rafael Cruz-Cruz and SP4 Victor C. Navone Jr. were infantrymen serving with 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On February 11, 1969, Cruz and Navone were on bunker security at LZ Bronco in Quang Ngai Province, RVN, when another American G.I. opened fire on them with an M16 rifle from the back of Bunker 49 NBD. Both soldiers sustained fatal wounds in the attack. A third person on bunker duty with them returned fire, chasing off the shooter. Investigators were initially unable to get any information from the individual who fired back at the perpetrator as he was in a state of shock and hysterical. Navone was reportedly preparing to rotate back to the United States when this incident occurred. Cruz received a posthumous promotion to Corporal. THANK YOU

Dear Cpl Rafael Cruz-Cruz
I hope your photo is put here because this wall of faces needs yours. Thank you for your service as an Infantryman. The zip code of where I grew up is your number on this wall, so sad. It is so important for us all to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.
