Ground Casualty

The 90th Replacement Battalion arrived in Vietnam on August 30, 1965, in anticipation of a large U.S. troop build-up. The Battalion was responsible for processing arriving replacements and those departing at the end of their tour. The 90th Replacement Battalion was situated on the road to Saigon between the village of Bien Hoa and the huge base at Long Binh. PFC Jose M. Cruz was a Card and Tape Writer serving with the 6th Data Processing Service Center, 90th Replacement Battalion. Cruz operated a punch card which the Army used to manage personnel accounting. Punch cards were a common method of data storage until their obsolescence by computers in the 1980’s. A little over two months after arriving in Vietnam in August 1966, Cruz became ill with malaria, a disease spread through bites of infected mosquitoes. He was admitted to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh where he expired on October 19, 1966. Cruz was twenty-one years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

honoring you...

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.
