Remembering An American Hero

Dear Major Carlos Rafael Cruz, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

You were with me for my career.

I purchased a POW-MIA bracelet with your name and information on it while I was in basic training in San Antonio, Texas in 1991. I wore your name on my wrist every day for about 16 years, but it traveled with me for my over-20 year career. It's like a piece of my life now. On occasion, I was asked who you were, and could only answer "a hero," because I knew little of your situation. Eventually, I found 19 documents detailing your incredible career and incident in war causing your death. I still have your bracelet, and always will. I am hoping for a rubbing of your name from the Vietnam Memorial Wall, so I can frame it along with your bracelet and honor your sacrifice more every day. Major Carlos R. Cruz, I salute you. You will never be forgotten.

Even though.... I know.....

Even though I have never met you at all, I Do know that you are indeed a hero.
Even though you have perished in war, I know that you have made plenty of others suffer the same fate as well.
Even though we didn't live in the same generation, I know that we are both Puertorican-American. Even though I don't know what you look like, I know that you have the face of a hero and a champion. Even though I have no personal remembrance of you at all, I know that I will always remember your astounding efforts and support in fighting for your country. OUR country. Thank-you for your valiant and courageous efforts in battle.

If I should die...remembrances for MAJ. Carlos Rafael CRUZ, USAF...who made the ultimate sacrifice!!

If I should die, and leave you here awhile, be not like others, sore undone, who keep long vigils by the silent dust, and weep...for MY sake, turn again nto life, and smile...Nerving thy heart, and trembling hand to do something to comfort other hearts than thine...Complete these dear, unfinished tasks of mine...and I, perchance, may therein comfort you.
