My Soldier

I remembered your face, when you left that day. The tears you held back; the words you could not say. "W.R." you were just 20; so handsome and trim. Soon you were a soldier in a war so grim. The letters you wrote me, told of suffering and pain; of nights in foxholes, during monsoon rains. You spoke of shared memories; of family back home. They kept you going, when you felt alone. The months passed swiftly; your return was delayed. Death came to meet you, on May 9th of '68. Your precious life lost, in senseless confrontation.
