You couldn't have had a better friend
We went to jr high together. Duane lived in the country outside the city of Olympia then. We both had 22-rifles that we shot together when I stayed overnight at his house on a few weekends. Duane, his mom and three sisters moved to Tumwater where Duane was the star basketball player. I went to Olympia HS but Duane stayed friends with his jr high classmates. Many of us went to his funeral.

He was in ROTC and received his commission there.
