I Was There

I first got acquainted with James in Germany. We were then assigned to Vietnam. I was at Camp Evans the day he died. I was getting ready to leave the area I was in to go to breakfast (maybe lunch, I forget). Suddenly, I felt ill and went back to my tent to lay down. Shortly after that a 122mm rocket came down close to where James was. We were told it killed him instantly. I remember James as being a real nice guy. That was a long time ago, but that day is etched in my memory.

Ground Casualty

SP4 James B. Anderson was an Air Traffic Controller serving with Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 11th Aviation Group, 1st Cavalry Division. On May 9, 1968, SP4 Anderson was at Camp Evans in Thua Thien Province, RVN, when it was hit by more than fifteen rounds of 122mm rocket fire. Anderson was fatally injured after he was hit by metal fragments. He was posthumously promoted to Sergeant. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
