To My Husband

We had nearly a year together when you were drafted. I tried to hope that you would come back to me and we could resume a marriage that we barely had. Then you were killed. It was the worst time of my life. Everyone was so shocked they had no words. Fifty-two years now, and I go to your grave and wish you were here with me. You were so full of life, so gregarious, so enthusiastic about everything. And I heard that you were a hero, and I am so proud of you and so sad. The few memories I have of us I will always cherish. It has taken this long for me to process how courageous you were, and for me to put into words on this page how special you were. And how young. Every person on that wall with you has a story, and every family suffered a terrible loss. All of you have a place in our hearts. I am the last person on earth who remembers you now. I hope to see you soon.

do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Ah Mike....! And Life went on

When I go to the cemetary, I make sure you and George both have flags. He's lying down from you a little. I remember the Christmas Geroge was already in Viet Nam, and you were heading there. I remember you giving me a hard time. It's ok. Life went on. George made it home, while you were shot and killed, when we were in Germany. I was always sorry I couldn't get home in time. George died about 12 years ago, because of Agent Orange. Mike Go in God's Grace. Not forgotten.
