Biography

William Albert Baker served with the Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968 and again in 1970. He lost his life to non-Hodgkins Lymphoma caused by his exposure to Agent Orange in country. Many of Bill's friends are on the Wall. Now his name rests there too.

Decorated Vietnam veteran William A. Baker, 51, of 29 Pinewood Drive, Amherst, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 1996, at home after a lengthy battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a lieutenant and captain and retiring with the rank of major. He was the recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal (10LC), Purple Heart (2 OLC), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with SS, Valorous Unit Award and the Parachute Badge.
Mr. Baker was a member of the Amherst Congregational Church. He was a graduate of South High School, Torrance, Calif. He received his B.A. degree with honors from the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, class of 1973.
Mr. Baker was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 20, 1944, son of Evelyn (Hubbard) Baker of Newburyport, Mass., and the late William R. Baker. Besides his mother, survivors include his wife of 26 years, Cynthia P. (Jones) Baker of Amherst; a daughter, Alexis Baker of Amherst; a brother, Lane Baker of Newburyport, Mass.; a sister, Ruth Carson of California; his mother-in-law, Priscilla Linnell; a sister-in-law, Valerie Pence; a brother-in-law, Howard Jones, and several nieces and nephews.
He had lived in Amherst for the past 20 years, and formerly in Butzbach, Germany. Mr. Baker had been employed by Digital Equipment Corp., as a global channels manager for the past 17 years.
