Biography

Arthur L Bachmann Jr. was born June 10, 1948 to Arthur and Madelon Bachmann in Wheeling, West Virginia and was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He enlisted in the Army in October 1966 and after basic training at Fort Bliss was sent to Vietnam June 29th 1967 at 19 years of age where he served a 12 month tour of duty with Troop E2d squadron in the 11th Calvary Regiment and was at an SP5 rank when he was diagnosed with Crohn's disease during his foreign service in Vietnam. He was given an honorable discharge and medically retired on May 8th, 1968. He was always proud of his service in Vietnam and was honored and proud to have served his country. Arthur Bachmann, Jr. married Mary Ann Benda on October 3, 1970 and had three kids, Arthur L Bachmann III, Matthew Bachmann, and Jamie Bachmann. Our dad lived and suffered with his disease since Vietnam but it never affected his ability of being a wonderful father great husband and a provider to our family. He loved music and played guitar and even wrote his own music singing about giving thanks to God. As sick as he was, he never turned his back on his faith. In 1986 he became a grandfather for the first time and that brought him so much joy that I think that he was able to not focus on the pain as much. He really loved his grandchildren. After 33 years of suffering three major surgeries and countless stays at the Veterans Administration hospital in Albuquerque his body finally gave out and he died on November 14th, 2001 from complications brought on by Crohn's disease. He is survived by his wife of 31 years Mary, kids Arthur III and his wife Kari, Matthew, and Jamie grandchildren Kaylee, Jordyn, and Sadie. My dad was a true American soldier and risked his life for his country without any thought to his own life. He will always be my hero.
