Biography

James P. Nelis was born in Wilkensburg, PA on July 22, 1947. He lived with his parents and sister until he went to college. I met my husband at New Mexico Highlands University in the late 60's. Upon graduation, he received his draft papers and went to boot camp at Fort Dix. Jim spent his time in the service as a radio operator at fire stations on top of the mountains. He saw the sights of Khe Sanh, Quang Tri and places near the DMZ. He was released on January 18, 1972 as an E-4. After an adjustment to civilian life we started our life together on March 25, 1972 with our marriage. Jimmy was a good man with a high moral compass. He was honest and hardworking. He never spoke much about the horrors he witnessed while in the army. That was difficult for him. We started our lives in Illinois, but made moves to Wisconsin, then Albuquerque, New Mexico, and finally San Antonio, Texas in 1992. Even though he majored in Business Administration he loved being a salesman. He worked for food brokerages, and then Johnsonville Sausage. He worked as Regional and then National Sales manager with them. After a while he started having medical issues and began going to the VA Agent Orange started rearing its ugly head. After a few years and no hope for a cure, Jim passed away on December 3, 2011. He was laid to rest in a small Catholic cemetery in Raton, New Mexico overlooking the mountains. He really loved visiting there. I'm comforted in knowing that my husband will be acknowledged for serving his country in a time that many felt we should not have been involved in the Vietnam War. When those men were arriving home there were no ticker tape parades, just a lot of dissent. Thank you for recognizing our loved ones.

A Great Friend Indeed

I met Jim Nelis while we were students at NM Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM. We became great friends as members of the Beta Chi Fraternity. Jim had a great sense of humor and I can't ever remember him uttering a bad word against anyone. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He met his wife, Colleen, at NMHU. She was also a student there. I know they loved each other with all their hearts. Jimmy left this world way too early.
