Biography

Bryan Edward Bokuniewicz enlisted in the Marine Corps on November 16, 1965 at the age of nineteen. Born in Detroit, Michigan on September 18, 1946 to Frank and Betty Bokuniewicz; Bryan was the second of four children and grew up in the small suburb of Lincoln Park, Michigan. An athletic boy, Bryan excelled at baseball and received numerous trophies during his years of participation in the Little League Program. Bryan also was an avid bowler; a regular in leagues during his teen years. He was recognized more than once for his 300 game accomplishments. Enlisting with two of his friends, Bryan received training at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in San Diego, California. From there, he was ordered to active duty in Vietnam where he spent thirteen and a half months serving our country on the front lines. During this time, Bryan received numerous awards for his bravery and courage. They included the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Metal, National Defense Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge, and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on November 15, 1967. After his military discharge, Bryan returned to his childhood home where he found adjusting to civilian life extremely difficult, suffering from what we know today as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Sadly, Bryan spent the last seven years of his life in and out of mental institutions and passed away on June 16, 1974 at the age of twenty seven.
